mission | onyx

onyx was historically used as a medium from which pottery and sculptures were made. In the same way onyx aims to be a trusted medium for our communities to shape their thoughts, writing and artworks from.

Based in Birmingham, onyx was founded to exist as an authentic creative medium from which Black artists, writers and creatives can authentically shape and form their work.

As a Black independent publication, our vision is to provide a long-term publishing infrastructure that combats the history of suppression and devaluation of Black creative artistry within mainstream publishing. Our mission to provide an alternative and sustainble community-led creative space that authentically champions new and emerging talented Black creatives through print and publication. Our goal is to generate equitable creative publication opportunities and for marginalised Black creatives to gather and build long-lasting communal frameworks to flourish.

We are dedicated to supporting Black creative talent, especially with the socio-economic disparities which exist within the creative industries. We do this by commissioning our creatives above industry rates and pushing for more equitable profit models via revenue generation from the magazine.

To date onyx has published over 3,000 sold-out copies of the magazine and published and commissioned over 80 Black poets, writers and artists.
